Lately I’ve been reflecting on something that’s become important to me, and I don’t know if it’s because it’s my birthday month.

I’ve been thinking a lot about knowing I can take care of myself. About creating a life that feels meaningful on my own.

She Was Waiting for Her Husband to Fill Her Cup

Recently I had a conversation with a client, and she talked about waiting for her husband to fill up her cup.

For her, it felt selfish to fill up her own.

She felt that if she began to create a life she loved, she would somehow be leaving her husband behind.

I sat with that for a long time after our session, because I think a lot of women are carrying some version of it. The quiet belief that building something for yourself is a kind of betrayal. That wanting more for your own life means wanting less of the person beside you.

For me, there’s a sense of freedom in knowing that my happiness, my security, and my purpose aren’t entirely dependent on another person. Not because I don’t want partnership. I do. But what I bring to a relationship is different when I’m not asking it to hold me up.

The Difference Between Choice and Need

Over the years, both personally and professionally, I’ve wondered whether relationships feel different when they’re built on choice rather than on need.

When someone feels they have to stay because of finances, or social status, or security, or obligation, it can become harder to express what’s true. Harder to make decisions that honor both people. You start managing the relationship instead of being in it.

On the other hand, there’s something beautiful about two people who are each building lives they love, and then choosing to share those lives with one another.

I want to be careful here, because I don’t mean that partners shouldn’t support each other, provide for each other, or take care of each other. Those things can be incredibly meaningful. That’s part of what love looks like in practice.

The difference, perhaps, is whether those acts come from love or from obligation.

Adding to Your Life Isn’t the Same as Filling a Void

One thought I hear often from clients is: I want someone who adds to my life, not takes away from it.

I understand that. But I’d offer a small adjustment.

To me, adding to your life doesn’t necessarily mean filling a void. It can mean enhancing a life you are already intentionally creating.

That’s a different starting place. One is a gap you’re asking someone to close. The other is a life that’s already yours, that someone gets to join.

What I’ve Seen in the Therapy Room

As a couples therapist, I’ve seen relationships where people felt they had no other option but to stay.

I’ve also seen relationships where both partners continued choosing each other, even when they both had the complete freedom to leave.

Neither dynamic is simple. Every relationship has its own story, its own history, its own reasons. I’m not here to tell you that need is the villain and choice is the cure. Real love has both in it at different moments.

It simply leaves me with a question worth sitting in:

What does it feel like to love someone because you truly want to be with them, not because you feel you have to, or because you need them?

So I’ll Turn It Over to You

Can a relationship thrive when it’s built on choice rather than need?

I’d love to hear your perspective. Leave me a comment below, or come find me on Instagram and tell me there.
